Dear Hope: I’m Just Lazy

Dear Hope,
My girlfriend said I have no compassion for other people. She said I was selfish. I think I kinda am, I mean I like people and I think of helping I'm Lazy them, but I don’t do anything about it. Honestly I’m just lazy, I don’t want to have to do a lot. Keeping up with school and a girlfriend is enough, but I’m starting to feel guilty. Is there a way to have compassion without having to do too much?

Dear Jeff,
Compassion is not about how much you do. Compassion is the emotion you feel in response to the suffering (not guilt) of others, and that motivates you to want to help. There are many ways to help people and most don’t take much time or effort. Your girlfriend probably wants you to be aware of what is going on around you. If someone drops a book near you, pick it up for him or her. When you walk through doors, hold it for the next person. Those simple acts of kindness show compassion for people.
