Dear Hope: Stop Talking About Me!

Dear Hope,

This girl that sits behind me in my history class keeps saying shit about me.  At first I just ignored it, but now it’s really annoying and it starting to bother me.  I have not said anything to her, but I’m not sure what to do.  Should I confront her?

Dear Kellie,

I’m sorry you are dealing with this, but it sounds like you are a strong person.  I’m glad to hear you have been trying to ignore it, as hard as that is, it’s the best thing.  When people say mean things it’s to get a reaction and to make themselves feel something.  It makes them feel powerful.  Most times they are going through something or they have low self-esteem, but that is still no reason to do it.

When it starts to become an everyday thing it’s time to do something about it.  It’s time to ask her to stop.  Talk to a friend and tell them what has been going on.  They can help you figure out what to say and you can practice saying it.  A friend can help give you confidence.

Then the next time you see her look her straight in the eyes and tell her to stop.  Be firm with a nice tone.  All you can do is tell her, it doesn’t mean she will stop.  If she doesn’t, it’s time to tell someone else and get some help.  Talk to the teacher or counselor and let them help you handle this.
