Dear Hope: Am I Pretty?
How can I know if I’m pretty enough? My parents always say I am and I have had friends tell me too, but when I look in the mirror I don’t see what they see. So how do I know? Am I pretty? I have sent a picture also.
– Pretty or Ugly?
Dear Pretty or Ugly,
There is no “pretty enough.” Everyone has their own unique look. I understand wanting to fit in or wanting to feel like you measure up, but what are you measuring up too? As cliché as it sounds, beauty really does come from within; confidence is what truly looks beautiful. I know asking questions like this or posting YouTube videos showing pictures and asking “Am I pretty or ugly?” is a trend right now, but going to strangers is not the way to get validation. I will not be posting your picture with this, because I don’t feel it is appropriate. Take some time and think about your good qualities, the things that make you who you are. Make a list of the things that make you feel special or beautiful to you. Work on building your self-esteem. When you feel good about yourself you will be more confident about all aspects of your life, including what you see in the mirror. When your family says you are pretty, believe them and say thank you.
If you feel like you are having a lot of self-doubt about yourself and it is starting to overwhelm you, talk to your parents. You can ask them about talking to a counselor. The question is not am I pretty or ugly, the question is how can I become confident and self-assured with the beautiful person that I am.
