6 Tips On Talking to Your Parents

Do you need to talk to your parents about something a little more serious?

Talking to Parents

Here are 6 tips on how to start talking to your parents.

1. Have a plan.

Get all your thoughts together and make a list of what you want to say.

2. Figure out a good time to talk to your parents.

Ask them if they can set aside some time to sit and talk without distractions and without everyone being tired or stressed.

3. Get right to the point.

Let them know what you want to talk about. (It shows that you are prepared).

4. Stick to your topic, don’t get distracted.

Stay calm; even if they get mad don’t react negatively.  (Show them you are mature enough to handle this situation.)

5. When they talk, look at them and listen.

Focus on what they are saying.

6. Thank them for taking the time to talk to you.

It may not seem fun to follow these steps, but you have to remember that when you talk to your parents you are trying to get something across and you want them to be open to it.  Showing your parents your maturity and preparation will ultimately help you get them on your side.  Having serious conversations can be hard and they may not always work out the first time, but keep trying and the communication will get better and easier.
